Costs
What it actually costs to build an app in India in 2026
Indicative 2026 ranges for websites, web apps and mobile apps in India, what pushes the number up, and the running costs most quotes leave out.
The short answer: in India in 2026, a business website built by an agency costs roughly ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh, a custom web app or first version of a SaaS product roughly ₹2 lakh to ₹15 lakh, and a mobile app anywhere from about ₹3 lakh for a lean first version to ₹50 lakh and more for a full product on iOS and Android. After launch, budget 15 to 20% of the build cost every year to keep it healthy.
Those ranges are wide because “an app” covers everything from a five-screen booking tool to a product with payments, user roles, chat and an admin panel. Below is where the money goes, so you can tell a fair quote from a lowball one.
All figures are indicative, drawn from 2025 and 2026 pricing guides published by Indian agencies and platforms (listed at the end), and exclude GST. They are not Yakooha’s prices, and they will vary with scope, city and team.
Indicative ranges by type of project
| What you’re building | Typical scope | Indicative range (agency, before GST) | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business website | 5 to 15 pages, CMS, forms, basic SEO | ₹50,000 to ₹2,00,000 | 3 to 6 weeks |
| Online store | Catalogue, cart, payment gateway, order emails | ₹1,00,000 to ₹5,00,000 custom; less on Shopify or WooCommerce | 4 to 10 weeks |
| Custom web app or internal tool | Logins, roles, dashboards, a few integrations | ₹2,00,000 to ₹15,00,000 | 6 to 16 weeks |
| Mobile app, lean first version | One core flow, login, simple backend | ₹3,00,000 to ₹18,00,000 | 2 to 4 months |
| Mobile app, iOS and Android, growth stage | Payments, notifications, admin panel, analytics | ₹20,00,000 to ₹55,00,000 | 3 to 6 months |
| Complex platform or SaaS | Multi-tenant, many roles, heavy integrations | ₹50,00,000 and up | 6 to 12 months |
You will see quotes well outside these ranges. Freelancers and template-based builds come in lower. Larger product studios come in higher: one Indian product studio publishes MVP ranges of ₹15 lakh to ₹50 lakh, while another agency says a tightly scoped MVP is achievable for ₹3 lakh to ₹5 lakh. Neither is wrong. They are pricing different things.
What actually drives the cost
Price is mostly people multiplied by time. Published Indian agency rates range from roughly ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 an hour depending on seniority and the firm. So the real question is how many hours your scope needs. These are the things that add hours:
- Number of user types. A customer app is one thing. A customer app, a vendor app and an admin panel is three things sharing a database.
- Platforms. A website plus iOS plus Android costs more than any one of them. Cross-platform tools such as Flutter or React Native narrow the gap; they don’t remove it.
- Integrations. A payment gateway, WhatsApp, SMS, maps, Tally or Zoho, a courier partner. Guides put each at roughly ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh of work, more if the other side’s documentation is poor.
- Real-time features. Chat, live tracking and live dashboards are much harder than screens that load once.
- Design depth. A custom design system costs more than adapting a good template. Sometimes it is worth it; for a first version it often isn’t.
- Compliance. Health records, lending, KYC or children’s data need extra care, and under the DPDP Act any product holding personal data needs some.
- Unclear scope. The biggest cost driver of all. A change halfway through costs more than the same change agreed at the start.
The costs that aren’t in the quote
Most quotes cover building the thing. Running it is a separate bill. Plan for these:
| Item | Indicative cost |
|---|---|
| Domain name | ₹600 to ₹2,500 a year |
| Hosting and cloud | A few hundred rupees a month for a simple website; roughly ₹5,000 to ₹50,000 or more a month for an app with real traffic |
| Apple Developer Program | US$99 a year |
| Google Play developer account | US$25, one time |
| Third-party services | Email, SMS, WhatsApp messages, maps, error tracking; usually pay-per-use |
| Payment gateway | Around 2% per transaction on standard plans, plus GST on the fee |
| Maintenance and updates | 15 to 20% of the build cost a year |
| GST on the agency’s invoice | 18% on software and IT services; claimable as input credit if you are registered |
Maintenance is the line people skip and later regret. Apple and Google release new operating system versions every year, libraries need security updates, and the stores eventually reject apps that fall behind their requirements. An app nobody looks after starts to break within a year or two.
How to make a smaller budget go further
- Start with the one workflow that makes or saves money. Build that well, launch it, then add the rest.
- Consider a web app first. A responsive web app works on every phone, skips app store review and costs less. Go native when you need reliable push notifications, offline use, heavy camera work or a presence in the app stores.
- Use proven tools where they fit: Shopify for a straightforward store, an off-the-shelf CRM before a custom one.
- Write down what is out of scope as clearly as what is in.
- Keep 15 to 20% of your budget aside for changes once real users arrive. There will be some.
How to read a quote
A good quote breaks the work into features or milestones with a price against each, lists what is excluded, says who owns the code and accounts, and states what support you get after launch. A quote that is one line and one number tells you nothing about what you are buying.
If two quotes differ by three times, ask both agencies to walk you through their assumptions. Usually one has understood something the other hasn’t, or one has left out testing, the admin panel or deployment.
At Yakooha we give a fixed price only for a scope we can write down in detail, and every project includes 30 days of support after launch. Because you own the code, the repository and every account from day one, the running costs above sit in accounts you control.
In short
A website: up to a couple of lakh. A custom web app: a few lakh to the mid-teens. A serious mobile app on two platforms: tens of lakhs. Then 15 to 20% a year to keep it running well. Scope decides where you land in each range, so spend time on scope before you spend money on code.
