Nalanda Junction

A website for a three-centre coaching institute in Pune

Nalanda Junction is a sample brief. We imagined a coaching institute with three centres in Pune, where parents make the decision, students browse on their phones, and everyone wants the same four things: batch timings, fees, faculty and a free class to try. The institute is imaginary. The website isn't: we designed and engineered it, and you can use it right now, below.

A sample brief, a real product. We wrote this brief ourselves. The business is imaginary; the product is not: we designed and engineered it, and you can use it below. We publish results only for work a client has let us verify, so this page shows none.

The brief

We imagined Nalanda Junction as a coaching institute that started with one classroom in Kothrud and now has three centres across Pune, teaching JEE, NEET, MHT-CET and a Foundation programme for classes 8 to 10. Its students are fifteen and sixteen, mostly on phones. Its customers are their parents, who compare three or four institutes on a weekend and want facts before a counselling visit.

A visit to a site like this has a few distinct reasons behind it: a parent checking fees and timings near home, a student checking who teaches Physics, a family coming to register for the scholarship test, and an enrolled parent checking marks and dues.

  • Three centres: Kothrud, Aundh and Hadapsar
  • Six courses across four exam goals
  • An in-house scholarship and admission test, NJSAT
  • Most students are under 18, so a parent consents for them

The problem

Coaching websites in India tend to shout: rank banners, topper photos, discount countdowns. Underneath, the answers parents actually need are buried in PDFs or held back for a phone call: which batch runs at which centre, what the fee is with GST, how instalments work, who the teachers are.

Children's data raises the stakes. Scholarship registrations, demo bookings and results all involve minors, and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act expects a parent's verifiable consent before an institute holds a child's details.

  • Fees and GST are rarely shown plainly
  • Batch timings live in WhatsApp forwards, not on the site
  • Results pages use photos and names of minors without saying how consent was taken
  • Parents have no single place to see attendance, marks and dues

The approach

We took the name literally. A junction is where lines meet and split, so the home page is a metro-style route map: stations are classes, lines end at the exams, and choosing a class and a goal sends a small train down the right line to a ticket with the course, the next batch and the fee. The rest of the site borrows from the same two worlds, the railway station board and the student's ruled notebook, and stays quiet so the information can do the work.

Every number a parent asks about is on the page and calculable: tuition, scholarship, CGST and SGST, and each instalment's date and amount. Every flow that touches a child's data starts with an OTP to a parent's phone, which doubles as the consent step, and the results page is designed as a sample with initials, consent tags and no photographs.

  • A route-map course finder as the one memorable moment
  • Line colours that follow each course from the map to the timetable
  • Fee tables that show GST and instalments instead of 'call for fees'
  • Parent-phone OTP as verifiable consent
  • Marathi and Hindi where a Pune family would expect them, set in Tiro Devanagari

What shipped

  • Pick a class and a goal on a metro-style route map and see the course, next batch and fee
  • Read a live departures board of upcoming batches, filtered by centre
  • Filter batches by centre, class and course and see the week as a timetable grid, or add it to a calendar
  • Work out a course fee with GST, a scholarship slab and a 1, 3 or 6 instalment plan
  • Reserve a seat and pay through a sample UPI checkout, then download a GST receipt
  • Register for the scholarship test with a parent's phone OTP and download the admit card
  • Look up a sample scholarship result and carry it into a seat reservation
  • Book a free demo class and see the WhatsApp confirmation
  • Sign in to the parent portal to see attendance, a test-score chart, fees, remarks, and book a PTM

Under the surface

How it is built

In production this would be a Next.js site with server-rendered course, batch and faculty pages generated from a Node.js student information service on PostgreSQL, so timetables, seat counts and fees come from the same records the centres use. Payments go through Razorpay, with instalment schedules created as payment links per student and GST invoices numbered and stored against each payment. OTPs are sent through MSG91, confirmations and test marks through approved WhatsApp Business templates, and everything is hosted in an Indian region with student data kept in India.

  • One data model for courses, batches, seats and fees, shared by the website, the counsellor desk and the parent portal
  • Consent records stored with the OTP event, the parent's number and the notice version they agreed to
  • GST invoices generated server-side with CGST and SGST for intra-state supply and a gapless invoice series
  • Parent portal behind phone OTP sessions, scoped to the parent's own children
  • Results published only from records that carry a verified scorecard and a consent flag

Considered and turned down

We considered running the parent portal as a separate mobile app, as many institutes do. We kept it on the web: parents check it a few times a month, an app install is a barrier for that, and a web portal shares its data model and design with the public site.
